Upamala Tennakone, GIS operator,

Trained in GIS work through the Environment and Development project in Ordnance Survey, UK in Resource Survey and Mapping, Cartography. Counts 10 years of experience in Drafting, cartography, architectural work, mapping and GIS work. Provides GIS / RS and Graphics support for the project work. Has developing an online Atlas of Climatology for Sri Lanka and an Information System for the Mahaweli Project in collaboration with web programmer.

Heli Bulathsinhala, Research Assistant,

Completed M.Sc in Water Resources at the University of Moratuwa. Holds a B.Sc degree in 2nd (Upper) Class in Civil Engineering from the University of Moratuwa.

Collects climate, hydro-climatic and hydro-electricity data, carries out data analysis, quality control, climate impacts assessments and hydro-meteorological work. Working towards a hydro-climatic prediction system for the Mahaweli.  

Kusalika Ariyarathane, Research Assistant,

Completed M.Sc candidate in Oceanography at the Post Graduate Institute of Science, University of Peradeniya. Holds a First Class B.Sc (Eng.) degree from the University of Peradeniya.

Collects climate, maritime and plantation data. Carries out data analysis, quality control, climate impact assessments and studies on air-sea interactions around Sri Lanka with a focus on Sri Lankan Climate and Indian Ocean Influences

Zeenas Yahiya, Project Manager,

Obtained a B.A in Social Sciences at the Open University of Sri Lanka. .Has 4 years of experience in scientific documentation at the Institute of Fundamental Studies, Kandy.

Helps prepare papers, articles and reports for publication, coordinates between NRMS management and IRI regarding administrative work and accounting, has brought "Bibliography of Climate in Sri Lanka" to publication.

Chanaka Wickremasinghe, Data Entry Operator,
Completed General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) Education. Training in Desktop Publishing and computer graphics.
Performs data acquisition, entry, scanning and checking for entire database. Helps maintain the project literature database. Assists with all project tasks.

M.R.A. Siraj, Web-programmer,

Completed Bachelors at Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology. Works with all project members to construct and update the website. Carries out web site development for the Water, Human-Elephant-Conflict and Plantations projects. Supports graphics, Java, html and animations requirements.

Irugal Bandara

Irugal Bandara, Junior Research Engineer


Obtained a B.Sc in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Peradeniya in 1999. Thereafter, he followed a year-long post-graduate diploma course at the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Deharadun, India. Bandara assisted with the project on Tea and Coconut Plantations.


Manjula Siriwardhana, Junior Research Engineer
obtained a B.Sc. in Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Peradeniya Sri Lanka in December 2003 with honors. She is researching under the project ‘Assessment of Impact of and Adaptation to Climate Change in the Plantation sector in Sri Lanka’. She is working under ‘Mahaweli River Basin Project’ from January 2005.

Prof. C.M. Madduma Bandara

Chairman, Natural Resources Management Services,

Senior Professor of Geography, University of Peradeniya,

Fellow of the Royal Society of Geographers, Adviser to the Goverrnment of Sri Lanka on the Mahaweli Authority. Authour of numerous works related to climate, water and agriculture. B.A from University of Peradeniya, Ph.D from Cambridge University.


Guidance and support for work at NRMS. Helps IRI liase with Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka.

S.B. Rajakaruna

Manager, Natural Resources Management Services,

Formerly Area Manager, Ceylon Tobacco Company. Served on Governing councils of University of Peradeniya, Central Agricultural Research Policy. B.Sc and M.Sc in Agriculture from the University of Peradeniya.

Mr. Rajakaruna manages the work of the IRI project and oversees the project staff members, the office and infrastructure requirements, the purchasing of equipment and personnel issues. He helps liaise with the Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka, in particular with the Environment and Forest Conservation Division.
