These sites are dedicated to those we lost and is aimed at alleviating the
suffering of those who survived. After the Tsunami, these sites were launched to
provide credible scientific information regarding hazards, meet scientific needs
for relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction, assist fund-raising efforts of
others and to put those who wanted to help in touch with those who could help.
We have been inspired by the extraordinary response, resourcefulness and
achievement of ordinary people in Sri Lanka and outside who organized relief so
well in the first week. Since then there has been a tremendous outpouring of
financial assistance to the government, international agencies, lending
agencies, International Non-Governmental Organizations, local NGO's and private
concerns.
We now realize that such funding is double-edged and should be
accompanied by good policy, sound science and technology, best and appropriate
practices, equity, transparency, accountability and the engagement of the
affected people. We are resolved to join with as many others as possible to this
end. In the long run, we hope that this site shall serve to bring together
people on a common cause to lead to fundamental change in Sri Lanka based on
justice, democracy, equity, peace and empowerment of Sri Lankans at all levels.
