The Maldives has taken a leading role in promoting sustainable development and low-carbon growth internationally. Maldives is one of the most vulnerable countries on earth to global environmental change. The Ministry of Housing and Environment of the Maldive Islands was an early partner in the development of the Masters in Development Practice. The Ministry recognizes that education and training opportunities for Maldivian students, research programs and collaborations with international researchers and educationists are critical.
FECT has been active in the Maldives since 2009 working on projects on climate, water resources, disaster risk assessment, renewable energy and public health. Our partners in Columbia University and elsewhere have work going on related to fisheries and intra-seasonal climate predictions. We produce a monthly climate advisory which is found at fectmv.blogspot.com Further details on our work is found at our Maldives portal at tropicalclimate.org/maldives
FECT oversees the linkage between the Maldives and the program at
the University of Peradeniya as part of ongoing collaboration
(Maldives flyer) between the Earth Institute, FECT and
Maldivian organizations. During three visits of the FECT principal
scientists discussions were held with with the Maldivian
National University, UNDP, Renewable Energy Maldives, Ministry of
Agriculture and Fisheries and Malidivian Meteorological Service on
the promotion of research collaboration, teacher exchange,
co-supervision of research by students and the potential for
Maldivian students to participate in the MDP program and for MDP
students to undertake internships in the Maldives.
We are undertaking the following programs to prepare for greater
collaboration.
